Commentary: Not your typical senior center

Jan 30, 2019

I recently had the privilege of touring the Eden Prairie Senior Center. While I was there, a hot card game was going on, an exercise class was jamming in the lower level and beautiful hand crafted items were being made in the wood shop. (By the way, the wood shop is crazy awesome and, for a small fee, you can use all of the really serious woodworking tools.)

I knew that the senior center offered classes, but what I didn’t know was that there are a host of rather impressive and fun events going on. There are so many educational options available, for example, investment groups, computer classes and even a class in choosing insurance plans, but also offered are a slew of fun events planned every year. Events like a holiday social, the Fall Festival and coming soon, a Valentine’s celebration. And if you are feeling adventurous, maybe you should schedule a trip through the Eden Prairie Senior Center. Who knows, you may just find yourself at the Kentucky Downs Racetrack this coming May.

There is a long list of services that are provided to the community as well. Services like the Senior Outreach Program where help is offered to seniors and their families to connect with needed resources. Other programs and services are offered through the center as well. There’s a senior rental housing program, Meals on Wheels, senior network programs and more. Need a space for an event? The Eden Prairie Senior Center has you covered with various event spaces available for rent. Can’t find a ride? They’ve taken care of that too. They now offer free transportation to and from the center.

Yes, the amenities and services are incredible and the staff is just as amazing. Hats off to Sue Bohnsack and Josh Rockey for keeping the whole place running like a well-oiled machine. Sue, the Recreation Supervisor at the center, is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to senior topics and if she doesn’t know the answer you can bet she will find it for you. There are so many services, classes and resources that it would be difficult to include them all in this article so check out their website at www.edenprairieseniorcenter.com or give them a call at 952-279-8050.

If you’ve never been to the senior center, check it out. As for me, I’ll be spending my spare time in the wood shop with my new found friends at the Eden Prairie Senior Center.
